Wishlist ~Stand Creatures~

Summary:   Sorry guys.  No news I could find today.  Since I want to update my blog at least once a day, I have decided to write about another Wishlist series blog entry.  In this 3rd of the Wishlist series, I am discussing about “Stand creatures.”

In this “Wishlist” series, I will be discussing a features/concepts/mechanics that I feel like EOJ should have or want it to have in the future to make the game even more exciting.  Although I often try to use some facts to backup my reasonings, this series are nothing but pure hope that I have and nothing in this series is official. But who knows maybe someday.

What is Stand Creatures?

It’s a form of creature that has symbionicic relationship with its host creature i.e. a Stand creature can exist only while the host exist.

How would I implement Stand creature?

There are two ways that I can think of for implementing Stand Creature in the game of EOJ.  One is the approach with using spells and the other is make it as the ability of certain creatures.

As with Permanent spell discussion, spell approach would give us more flexibility, since players can put Stand creature on any creatures that they like, more variation can be seen.

Creature’s ability approach seems to go well with EOJ in general because of the limitation in number of spells people put in their decks.

In Creature ability approach, here is how Stand creatures should work.

1) Stand Creature should NOT be counted as occupied field.  Otherwise, this will break the game balance by player being able to cast more than 1 creature a turn.

2) Stand Creature Ability possessing creature (called host creature) is summoned on a field.

3) At the host creature’s blind spot, hologram appearing creature appears (stand creature).

* The reason why I picked blind spot is because that’s where the weakness of the host creature is and therefore, this will balance the game play.

4) Stand creature can be activated just as the host creature or regular creature does.  And it has its own attack pattern, attack power, and perhaps health point.

5) If opponent decides to cast a creature on the field where the Stand creature is, the opponent creature pays a cost.  This cost can vary from Stand to Stand.  One example would be, the casted creature cannot attack.  Another would be reduce health by 2 etc.

6) Stand creature dies when host creature is destroyed.

* For spell approach, rather than stand appearing right after the summoning, they can be summoned by having Stand spell casted over an allied creature.

Could this be implemented in EOJ?

As long as the stands not counted as the number of occupied fields, I think they are very fair ability.  Paying cost to cast over a stand is nothing but just an adjacent field ability of exisitng creatures.  So I don’t think we need to worry about breaking game balance with these cards.  And with EOJ being PS3 supported game, I think it would be cool to see holographic creatures come out from adjacent field.

Why Stand creature?

This will add another level of game play.  For example, stand creature having N&S attack pattern will make essentially the host creature having diagnal attacks.  Plus since you can activate Stand creature in separate from Host creature, you can really have new level of strategy built around it.

What’s the probability this will be implemented in the EOJ?

Although I think this is cool idea, I have to admit this is really a long shot.  I would say there is at most 10% chance they would include ability like this.  It is more likely that they simply add diagonal attack pattern intead.

I have often thought it would be cool to have “gemini” type creatures that cover 2 fields but have their lives linked so that if one dies then so does the other. You are right to say that one of them should not count towards the 5 fields, as that would make them unbalanced. Or maybe a rule that these creatures cannot be cast when you already have 3 or more creatures on the board would mean that they could both still count and still be fair.

Also, diagonal attack patterns is something I would like to see. It’s a simple idea that wouldn’t require any new rules or abilities. It would add some interesting strategic possibilities for attacking creatures hidden in a corner and protected on 2 sides by heavier creatures.

Either of these things would be better than some of the things they have put in, like ressurection, which I don’t think is a very strong ability at all due to the 3 of any single card deck limit. What I think would have been a better way to do it is rather than pay 1 mana to put a new creature in place of the old one, instead pay 1 or more mana to bring the creature back to life on 1HP.

    @Rufus Omega

    Inverse Chain? Interesting.

Actually Summoning a new creature, perhaps with some restriction such as same Race type or Affiliation with 1 HP seems very reasonable. I don’t think it will break the gameplay, either. In fact, I can sort of see that could be implemented in the future set. Much more likely than Stand or Gemini creature.

As for Ressurection, it certainly requires couple steps. Pure chance of having the same card to replace may not be high enough to make this ability as main theme of a deck; however, I think Sony knew this. Aside from Ressurection, they have added graveyard recovery and library search(though this one seems a bit weak) plus our old friend draw cards. With these combined, you could have virtually more than 3 of a kind, increase the chance of having one in your hand.

Not that I am interested in making this type of deck, and no gurantee that this will be as competitive as other decks, but just demonstrate yet another level of game Sony has added with Set.2. 🙂

Isn’t the stand idea from a graphic novel?

If you are talking about Japanese Graphic Novel as well as comic book called Jojo’s Mysterious Adventure, yes that’s where I got the word from. 🙂

That’s part of reason I specified Blind Spot as the field where Stand should appear since that’s where the real stand in the Jojo’s comic appear.
